There is no shortage of data in the world – but there is a lack of understanding about how to apply that data and make it valuable to our work. The big promise of 'smart data' is not about efficiency or optimization - rather, we have an opportunity to define and shape the behaviors of our target audiences and maximize our efforts to reach, engage and compel them to action.
This keynote session will focus on:
• 'Smart Data". What types of data is available and how can it be used, with a focus on identifying new potential audiences, predicting or shaping behaviors and personalizing marketing.
• Data culture and systems. How to apply big data to product development, marketing and operations, as well as the organizational capacity, flexibility and commitment that is required.
• The Results. The impact that utilizing 'smart data' is having on a variety of industries and how it can be applied to publishers, nonprofits and other organizations.
Brian will share examples of how 'smart data' is being applied already, including the results of a top-secret 'skunkworks' project from the auto industry, as well as how publishers, nonprofit organizations and others should embraced this approach, work together and transform their industries.

In 2007 as the recession was devouring print publications and businesses in its wake, Rebecca Darwin had an idea that seemed to go against the logic of the day. Darwin and her team felt that there was room for one more ‘smart print magazine’ and she was determined to see it happen. With the Southern lifestyle as her muse, Darwin set about to create a publication that has been referred to as “the New Yorker of the South”.
Gathering the best writers and photographers with a mission to capture the expansive and rich offerings of the Southern lifestyle, Garden & Gun made its debut. Darwin explains how the magazine’s concept was born, her insistence on it being a national publication, how they deliver to an almost obsessive audience and what is next for the brand.
